MAPP’s Second Image Competition attracted a high standard of entries.

First Prize Winner Simon Graham for Titanium Queen
First Prize - Simon Graham for Titanium Queen. Commercially pure titanium powder cold isostatically pressed into shape using a silicone mould, for further processing by Field Assisted Sintering Technology (FAST).

The competition, which was open to the wide network of MAPP researchers at all levels, showcased some of the fantastic photographs captured during the powder and processing studies taking place across partner sites.

Researchers from across the MAPP programme submitted more than 20 entries ranging from microscopic images, heat map and artefacts to equipment shots and structures.

Judging the entries was a tough job for the panel, a number of people from the Royce technical team and a professional reprographic team member.

The prize winners were as follows:

First prize           : Simon Graham for Titanium Queen

Runner up          : Max Emmanuel for Steps to Nowhere

Third prize          : Felicity Freeman and Ben Thomas for Melt Pool Pacman

Fourth Prize       : Alex Goodall for Electric Machine Stator

Steps to nowhere - Max Chester Jude Emmanuel - SEM image of SiC milled at 30kV 2.5 μA using a Xenon source on the Helios 5 Hydra DualBeam microscope captured in SE mode.
Runner up - Max Emmanuel for Steps to Nowhere. SEM image of SiC milled at 30kV 2.5 μA using a Xenon source on the Helios 5 Hydra DualBeam microscope captured in SE mode.

Winners were announced virtually through email and the prizes will be award at the next Quarterly Review Meeting on 28th and 29th March 2023.

All entries images can be view in the Galleries.

Melt Pool Pac Man - Felicity Freeman and Ben Thomas - Photo montage of images from a BeAM Magic 2.0 Directed Energy Deposition build using gas-atomised 316L steel powder. The images, collected by a coaxial optical camera, are live processed by a closed-loop control algorithm, which uses selection criteria based on skewness and circularity to screen out images with spatter. Images which passed are shown in false colour; images which failed are shown in grayscale with the melt pool boundary contour superimposed.
Third Prize - Felicity Freeman and Ben Thomas for Melt Pool Pacman. Photo montage of images from a BeAM Magic 2.0 Directed Energy Deposition build using gas-atomised 316L steel powder.
Electric machine stator - Alex Goodall - An electric machine stator created from soft magnetic electrical steel, with a Hilbert cross section to limit eddy current losses
Fourth Prize - Alex Goodall for Electric Machine Stator. An electric machine stator created from soft magnetic electrical steel, with a Hilbert cross section to limit eddy current losses.
